We are proud of our sporting tradition at Great Crosby. Our teams take part in local leagues and competitions with regular success.
During the year we train and have teams for football, swimming, cross-country, netball, athletics, rugby, rounders and cricket.
In lessons, the children also practise dance and gymnastics skills, hockey, basketball and lacrosse. Y3 have weekly swimming sessions at Merchant Taylors’ swimming pool.
2018 has been a great year already for Louis in Y5. In January, he won the Merseyside Schools Under-11 title.
In February he took part in his first international tournament - the Janos Molnar Memorial inBudapest. Louis wasn't allowed to take his own bat in his hand luggage, by airport security, so it had to be checked in along with his kit. Unfortunately it was lost in transit, so Louis had to buy new kit and to borrow an inferior bat from the organisers.
Despite the worst possible start for a first international tournament, Louis won his first match and beat the Czech in 3-2 sets, 5th set 12-10! He lost 2-3 in his second match to one of the Hungarians which went to 11-13 in 5th set. Louis was actually winning that match but the Hungarian got three edges and one net when Louis was 9-7 up! He was then beaten by the top seeded Hungarian in his group by 3-0 sets, but came back fighting right to the end in his last match against the Slovakian losing 3-0 but with all the sets extremely close - 9-11, 11-13, 10-12. He knew he had to win that match to potentially get through.
The top seed Hungarian and Slovakian both went through to next rounds and were in the final 8 (both got medals) from 39 players so Louis played amazingly given the international quality in his group. The standard of match play was phenomenal from 11 year olds and younger, especially the final 8. Louis was definitely up there in terms of quality match play and who knows how it could have turned out if Louis had his own bat.
It was an amazing experience for him and he really enjoyed it despite not coming back with a medal. Not a bad achievement for a 9 year old! Fingers crossed, he'll have better luck with our luggage for the next international tournament! We're extremely proud of Louis.
Also in February, Louis won the Under 11 Boys at the Halton 1 Star Table Tennis Tournament. He also managed to get through to the quarter finals in the Under 13 Boys and had some great wins....with his own bat!

We are very proud of Louis in Y4 who was our only representative in the Merseyside Schools Under 13s Table Tennis Championships. Louis won his first and second round matches in straight sets, to reach the semi-finals. He was beaten to a place in the individual finals by a much older and more experienced player, but it was a great effort.

Year 4 took part in and won the local Sports Hall Games at Chesterfield High.
In recent years we have represented Sefton in the Merseyside Youth Games for athletics and swimming.
Our current Y3 have won consecutive Everton in the Community finals at GoodisonPark, while they were in both Y1 and Y2. They firstly had to win two qualifying tournaments each time. Our current Y2 won the Y1 final last year as well.
